The month of June is here on Fork
and look forward to a great deep water bite for this time of year. There
will be some shallow water bite early and late but I will try to stay in
deep water as much as possible.
For the shallow water anglers look for large grass beds located on the
main lake or just inside major creeks. Start out early with a top water
bait like a yellow magic, pop-r, or spook in open water. For the matted
grass try a slickfish lure or frog. Once this bite slow kick out and start
throwing a lizard on a 1/8th ounce bullet weight. I will cover lots of
area with this by just throwing it out and swimming back in on a steady
retrieve. Once this slows some good choices if you stay in the grass will
be drop shot the edges or flip a jig in the grass. For the drop shot I
will throw a Zoom trick Worm in watermelon/red. For the jig I like a 1
ounce jig and craw rigged on a extra heavy rod and extra heavy line. Work
slow in the deeper grass punching the jig through and bouncing it a little
before picking it up and making a new hole.
For the mid depth anglers there will be several baits that will produce.
One of my favorites is a ˝ ounce Strike Works Wood Jig tipped with a Craw.
My best colors have been blue bruiser on cloudy days and watermelon/red on
sunny days. I will work main lake points and banks just outside of major
creeks locates in 7 to 15 feet of water. Flip and pitch to every piece of
cover you can see and work the jig several times to each stump. Other good
baits in this same area will be a Texas rig with a quarter ounce weight
and a lizard in watermelon or watermelon/red with a chartreuse dyed tail..
Work these baits on a small shakes with a long pause in between shakes.
On the deep bite look for fish to start stacking up on main lake humps,
points, road beds, drop offs and ridges located in 22 to 35 feet of water.
There will be a number of baits that will help you pull fish out of the
depths of Lake Fork. Baits such as the Spade Spoon, Deep diving cranks in
shad colors, Carolina rigs, heavy jigs, drop shots, and swim baits will
all take their fair share of fish. The best way to locate these fish is on
your graph and by throwing a marker buoy out to keep in the area of the
fish. If the fish are suspended try starting with the spoons, crank baits,
and swim baits at the desired depths. If the fish look like they are on
the bottom try throwing the Carolina rig, drop shots, or heavy jig for
your best results.
