Lake Fork

7-1-08Looks like July will be a hot one this year. Last year was not to bad. July can be very productive on big bass and numbers if you know what to look for and use your electronics. Typical summer patters are usually deep water structure but do not forget about shallow water stuff. There are fish on Lake Fork that never get deeper than 10 ft. I have seen this to many times. I can recall one 9, and two over 11 pounds that came out of 3 ft in the dead heat of July. Now I like to fish a little deeper for the most part, with 15-18 ft being my favorite depths but I will go deeper. Now if you like numbers VS/Size topwaters, chatterbaits, spinner baits and wacky rig, shaky heads are all good in 3-10 ft, and sometimes you will catch a big fish, but they are great for numbers. If you come to Lake Fork and are really after a big fish I like to throw baits that are more likely to catch big bass over 6 pounds. My favorite baits for big bass are big swim baits, Jigs,DD-22,big 10-12 inch worms rigged TX/rig. I like to look for shallow water next to deeper water and with good drop offs. Creek Channel bends with humps near by are good, pond dams, and long points that extend out into the lake. All these spots allow the fish to change his/her location in just a few seconds. They can pick the depth they like at anytime. Some like to suspend when others hold closer to the bottom. Now as for as my favorite colors ,well lets start with plastics, black/blue, June bug, tequila and watermelon red are my choice. Swim baits early over main lake points with grass/pads are great for big fish. I like the 3:16 Rising Sun best but others will work like the Bass Magic from Luck E Strike. Now jigs, Viper XP Jig in 3/8-1/2 oz in sour grape, summer shad, and purple passion are great worked in the areas mentioned above with timber close by. DD-22 and BPS deep divers are best in shad type patterns worked out over 25 ft over points ,humps, creek channels. Big worms TX rig well they work just about every where this month, but I do like creeks, and humps, and points best in 15-18 ft. Look for schooling fish this month on deep points and hang in that area for a little while. You can catch them from top to bottom. I Hope this helps you when you come to Lake Fork in July. I will be at Bass Pro Shop in Garland this month on July 10th, 25th, from 6-8 pm where I will be talking about the baits we are using and depths and rigging and taking any questions you may have. These will be current conditions at Lake Fork. These are FREE to the public so come on by and see me. Tank Demo starts at 7 pm.
